HOSPITAL DE LA FAMILIA - GUATEMALA
The Hospital de la Familia is a hospital and clinic high in the remote mountain jungle of Guatemala. The hospital serves the impoverished people who live in this area and the many people who travel to this hospital from other parts of Mexico and Central America. This extraordinary hospital was built and sponsored by an American philanthropist, Jack Younger.
The Hospital is staffed by a small group of local doctors. In addition, teams of American volunteer doctors, nurses, and technicians visit the hospital on a regular basis to provide highly specialized surgical care.
A critical part of the work of the Hospital de la Familia is surgical care for people who have lost their vision. Dr. Kutzscher and Dr. Schwartz have been members of a team of eye specialists who have regularly visited the Hospital de la Familia for 20 years. Dr. Kevin Lee has also been a part of the surgical team. These volunteer surgical teams are able to restore vision to hundreds of people. Enjoy the accompanying photos which show some of the people and the countryside in this remarkable region of Central America where Latino and Mayan workers still labor to keep the coffee plantations alive.
